CYBERIANA is a group exhibition organized by Techspressionism in their new 3D world — the virtual studio consists of 30 virtual rooms designed by exhibiting artists. Curated by Tommy Mintz, Renata Janiszewska, Michael Pierre Price, and Stephen Pare, the show features art by artists who use the term “Techspressionism” to describe their work.

Techspressionism is a contemporary art-historical term to describe fine artists using digital technology to convey subjective and emotional content. “Expressionists presented the world from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically in order to evoke moods or ideas, seeking to express their emotional experience rather than physical reality” — Techspressionism emerges with the same idea in the age of technology.

Immersed in the use of digital technologies over the course of the long pandemic, these artists formed new connections that affected their work. In these new, liminal spaces and relationships, artworks with original characteristics were created.

The virtual exhibition highlights that despite the relaxation of the pandemic’s constraints, the new, virtual normal for exhibitions are here to stay. Pointing out that the rapid rise of VR and AI resources has made it impossible for digital artists to continue on as before, the organization celebrates global connections via online gatherings and communities.

Techspressionism: Cyberiana is about international connections between artists sharing concepts and philosophies, while practicing radical inclusivity. Now we are together and technology is zooming ahead. How can digital art exhibitions be understood today? What is possible when we feel like we are in the same room?

Techspressionism: Cyberiana emerges as a town square for artistic neighbors — a locus of attention for a community of creative artists who value trading and sharing ideas, knowledge, and discoveries. Cyberiana diverges from the typical white cube format of online galleries with its artist-designed studios and vast potential of malleability.

The subjective lens of the individual artist (rather than the product of a corporate studio) is what connects Techspressionism to its predecessor, Expressionism.

In contrast with the subjectivity of the art style, Techpressionism emphasizes the collective aspect of the show – with the trust that the Metaverse, blockchain technology, and its smart contracts are here to stay, the organization celebrates this group of pioneering artists for leading our society in establishing a new socio-cultural reality, built in Web 3.

Interested artists can be part of Techspressionism by joining their biweekly Techspressionist Salon artist meetups on Zoom to discuss art and technology, and by sharing their artwork that uses technology as a means to express emotional experience on social media including the hashtag #techspressionism – the group reviews these images and reposts a curated selection.  Artists whose work is reposted are invited to be included in an online index of Techspressionist visual artists.

CYBERIANA is on view online through March 1st — see the exhibition and let us know your thoughts!
